Social Media Introduction
Social Media is a set of tools that facilitate connections, relationship building, and communication for individuals. This facilitation is similar to pre-social media vehicles (trade organizations, networking, customer service departments, etc.) but now it can be done online, more quickly and on a larger scale. There are three main aspects of social media you should consider.
Building Connections
Building connections in the digital arena is similar to building relationships outside it. You may meet people at an event, or by cold-calling their office to find new connections. Online you can find new relationships with people you would like to connect with or to whom you are referred by others. Over time you can increase quality of your connections by cultivating these relationships.
Cultivating Relationships
Once you have built connections you need to cultivate them. Attending events your connections are also attending is one effective way to maintain and grow relationships. Other ways include phone calls, email follow-up, coffee, and lunch. Online you can share pictures, stories, blogs, comments, and webinars to cultivate relationships. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with everything going on with everyone, so social media channels are great ways to fill the gap so the next time you see or talk to that person you have more to talk about.
Two (or more)-Way Communication
In social media, you have the ability to broadcast a message and received a message. In both instances it triggers a conversation. People will respond, interact or react to your message based on what and how you broadcast it. The great part about this interaction is it can lead to very interesting and informative conversations. When broadcasting, consider filtering what, how and when you do so. A network can inform or educate thousands of people, but it can also turn people away. People are sensitive to inappropriate, non relevant, or spam-like content. It takes time to develop and build a relationship. It takes only seconds to lose it.
Social Media Conclusion
In summary, social media is about building connections, cultivating relationships and interactively engaging with them.. Grow your network, but be focused on growing the quality of your network as opposed to the quantity of your network. When you do this, you will create an effective network on which you may grow your business.
